Originated in the Qing Dynasty, Huangcai folk song has been flourishing ever since.

Its flexible and diverse lyrics are the reflection of people’s daily life and production. Therefore, the feeling they express is plain but authentic and vivid. Each song is composed of five lines and each line usually has seven Chinese characters. It stresses level and oblique tones and rhymes, which, however, are not strict. The content mostly goes around love. More than 4,000 Huangcai folk songs had been collected in Ningxiang City from 1986 to 1987.

As a way of enjoying cultural entertainment for local people, the folk song also functions as the channel through which love is expressed by men and women.
